April 2019 Newsletter

Happy Anniversary! I am excited to announce that MFWCAA has reached its 50th year as an organization! We are so grateful for all of our former board members that have served to promote professionalism among our workers and influence positive changes in the programs we administer. Five decades have generated many changes: from calculating SNAP budgets on paper to MAXIS and METS systems, paper Food Stamps to EBT cards, new policy manuals, caseload increases…the list goes on! The past 50 years are a testament to the flexibility of Minnesota’s Financial Workers and Case Aides and their dedication to helping those in need.

We would love to hear about your experiences as a worker and how our jobs have evolved over the years! Please share any memories, history or fascinating facts you have about the job we do, the programs we work with or the computer systems we use (or didn’t have!)…topics such as “the MAXIS Moose,” or “waiting for half a day for a case to come out of background.” You may e-mail them to me or your Region Representative. We are looking forward to celebrating all of our accomplishments at our annual conference in October. Hope to see you there!

We are looking for that special Financial Worker or Case Aide that goes above and beyond, the one you can always count on. The cream of the crop! The best of the best! The bee’s knees! It’s time to nominate your favorite Financial Worker or Case Aide for the 2019 FW/CA of the Year Award! Nominating someone is easy. Just complete the nomination form! Include the person’s name, background, and the reason that you feel this person is deserving of this title. Remember this person must be a MFWCAA member. Nominations need to be postmarked or submitted online by 06/30/19.

Nominations can be completed on our website at www.mfwcaa.org or on the nomination form attached to this newsletter. The completed paper nomination forms can be mailed to our PO Box or emailed to Demi Rumsey at demi.rumsey@kcmn.us. Thank you.

Scholarship baskets are very important to our organization. They enable us to offer scholarships to our members and their families. Each year counties have the opportunity to donate a basket at conference. Some counties build a basket based on that year’s theme; others just go with what they like. It’s always fun to see the variety and creativity.

At conference, baskets are set up in the vendor room. Conference attendees are able to purchase tickets on Wednesday afternoon and all day Thursday. They then put their ticket in the jar by the basket they like the most and cross their fingers. After the business meeting on Friday morning, the basket raffle is held. Some conference attendees go home with something new (and if you win Carver County’s basket, you have to figure out how to fit it all in your car!), others go home empty-handed but everyone always has a good time.

After conference, the ticket money is deposited in the scholarship account. The number of scholarships available for the next year is based on ticket sales.

In January, scholarship applications are emailed to regions and posted on our website. Completed applications are due at the end of February. The scholarship committee votes on the entries and each winner is awarded $500.

We review the 2019 scholarship applications at our April meeting. The 2019 MFWCAA scholarship recipients will be announced in our July 2019 newsletter.

If you have any questions regarding our scholarship program, please contact Vice President Jessica Buckentin at jbuckentin@co.carver.mn.us. Thank you to everyone for participating in the MFWCAA Scholarship Program!

Hi, I am Lori Savoie, the new Region 2 Rep. For the inquiring minds that want to know about me…I am employed by White Earth Nation Financial Services as a family worker.   I live and work in Detroit Lakes.  I spend my winter time reading, quilting a little nothing fancy, beading, jigsaw puzzles, and my Sunday night BINGO at Zorbaz benefitting the youth hockey league.  My summers are spent riding my Harley.  I try to get in one long bike trip for about 7-10 days, last year it was the Black Hills and Wyoming.  I have 3 daughters and 8 grandchildren.  The oldest, a granddaughter is living and working in Washington DC as an intern aide to Senator Hoeven, ND and engaged (I am older than dirt) to the youngest, a grandson born 1/26/19.

Greetings. My name is Jeffrey VanGrinsven and I am a supervisor for the Hennepin County Fraud Unit. I have almost 12 years of experience as a Police Officer and Police Chief. I have been married to my high school sweetheart for over 31 years and have 3 boys (men). I love working with people. I’m excited to be the MFIA Liaison.

Happy Spring! My name is Mary Zurn. I am super excited to be back on the DHS Instructional Design Training Team as the team lead and especially excited to be the new DHS Liaison for the MFWCAA! My experience includes time as a trainer at DHS, as a supervisor in Stevens County and as an Eligibility Worker in Swift County. I have attended the MFWCAA conference many times as a worker and a couple times as a trainer. I am eager to work behind the scenes with the MFWCAA board in planning this fun and educational event. I am also excited to get to know you all better and to learn more about the great things you are doing in your agencies.

Are you or someone you know interested in being a vendor at our conference this year? Contact Vice President Jessica Buckentin at jbuckentin@co.carver.mn.us for more information!

You are invited to an Anniversary Celebration….Come help us celebrate MFWCAA’s Golden Anniversary!!!
